Tomato Andromeda F1 has been known since the end of the last century. And if in those years the appearance of each new hybrid was an event, gardeners tried not to miss new items, now this is not so. However, Andromeda, having received flattering characteristics soon after its inception, is now of interest to many summer residents and farmers who produce vegetable products for sale.
Tomato Andromeda F1 was bred in Rostov-on-Don by breeder A.A.Mashtakov. It is intended for cultivation in unprotected soil in many areas of both the European part of the country and the Trans-Urals. These are the Central Black Earth, North Caucasian, Middle Volga, Lower Volga, West Siberian, East Siberian regions. Despite the absence of the Central Region on the list, Andromeda is grown there too, using greenhouses if necessary. The hybrid received a registration in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in 1998, while it is stipulated that it is recommended, first of all, for commercial production.
Andromeda is a determinant plant. The bush is not a standard bush, but it is low (just over half a meter), spreading. The number of leaves is average, they are of a standard size, painted gray-green. The first cluster with fruits is formed after the 6th or 7th leaf, the subsequent ones - after 1-2 leaves. Each brush contains up to 7 fruits.
The main advantage of the hybrid is its high yield.
The fruits are flat-round in shape with barely noticeable ribbing. Their size is average, weight ranges from 80 to 120 g. Tomatoes contain 4–5 seed chambers and are colored red. At the same time, three varieties of Andromeda are known: in addition to red, there is pink, which ripens a little earlier, and gold, which differs not only in color, but also in larger tomatoes. It is impossible to clearly recognize the red Andromeda among the many varieties in appearance: this is how the fruits of dozens, if not hundreds, of the varieties available today look like.
Andromeda is an early ripe tomato, the fruits are ready to be harvested 3.5 months after sowing seeds for seedlings. The taste of tomatoes cannot be called excellent: the assessment of the tasters is 4.3 points on a five-point scale. They are mainly used in salads, including in dietary nutrition, but the fruits are also suitable for all kinds of processing: from obtaining juice from them and ending with whole-fruit canning.
The yield of the hybrid is very decent: with industrial cultivation, figures of more than 700 c / ha are achieved, but this is in typical "tomato" regions like the Astrakhan region. Summer residents from 1 m2 collect up to 12 kg of fruits.
Andromeda tolerates a decrease in temperature satisfactorily, but in regions characterized by a humid cold climate, they try not to plant it in the open ground. This is due to insufficiently high resistance to diseases, including late blight. At the same time, with an increase in humidity, tomatoes do not crack, they are capable of long-term transportation and storage. Collected unripe, they are successfully ripened in a city apartment.
The fruits have a classic shape and color.
As an industrial variety, Andromeda is widely used today, but summer residents prefer varieties with more tasty fruits and more disease-resistant. The main advantages of a hybrid are:
The disadvantages are the usual, not outstanding taste, not very strong root system and susceptibility to a number of diseases. Greenhouse cultivation can protect against late blight, but it is suitable only for those summer residents who can visit the site every day: you cannot do without airing the greenhouse. Still, the main purpose of the hybrid is commercial production in open ground in relatively warm areas and edges.
From the point of view of agricultural technology, Andromeda does not belong to particularly problematic tomatoes; almost any gardener can grow it. It must be remembered that this is a first generation hybrid; seeds from their own harvest are not suitable for sowing. In the southern regions, when growing this tomato, you can do without seedlings, but more often this stage is not bypassed. Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out at the usual time: two months before the intended transfer of seedlings to the garden bed. Seedling care has no peculiarities.
Too dense planting of bushes due to a tendency to fungal diseases is not recommended: there are only 4 plants per square meter of the garden. They approach the formation of bushes in different ways: in the southern regions they do not do this at all, in other places the variety is grown in two stems, they do not refuse to tie it up. With the onset of reddening of the tomatoes, the lower leaves are cut off.
Due to the modest size of the root system, irrigation cannot be skipped: at least until the beginning of ripening, the soil should be kept moist. Good mulching of the garden usually helps. Feeding is often required: in this regard, the hybrid is very gluttonous. The traditional three-time scheme is not enough, they try to give feeding 2 times a month.
Maintaining moisture is made easier by drip irrigation
In most regions, except for the very south, it is impossible to do without preventive spraying for late blight. In addition to removing excess leaves, it is imperative to use copper-containing preparations (Bordeaux liquid, copper oxychloride, etc.). This is another reason that ordinary summer residents are increasingly refusing to grow Andromeda.
The Andromeda tomato is good for large agricultural enterprises and farmers who grow tomatoes for sale. The disadvantages of the hybrid force ordinary summer residents to switch to other, more modern varieties.
Gulliver tomatoes are determinant varieties. Recommended variety of tomatoes for growing in greenhouses and greenhouses from film. Gardeners living in the southern regions of Russia (indicated in the State Register) can afford to plant plants in open ground.
The variety is popular, despite its young age:
